Representation Theory
The Male Gaze, the idea that the audience are forced to look at women from the men's point of view, or narcissistic women looking in the mirror. (Laura Mulvey)
The Female Gaze, A modernised version of The Male Gaze, except it is from the females perspective.
The Bechdel Test, the idea that films should pass 3 criteria for women:
Subculture, different groups that are presented in the media, i.e. youths, O.A.P.s (Dick Hebdidge & Ken Gelder)
The Female Gaze, A modernised version of The Male Gaze, except it is from the females perspective.
The Bechdel Test, the idea that films should pass 3 criteria for women:
- 2 named female characters
- the 2 women must have a conversation
- the conversation can't be about men/boys

Women's Health, March/April 2013 |
Women are represented to be weight and image obsessed clones. All of the text surrouding the model are ways to loose weight and look like the model on the cover. The one on the bottom right, "10 OBESITY BUSTING MEALS" is particularly shocking as most people reading Women's Health will be at a healthy body weight.
The image used of Rachel Bilson entices women to buy the magazine, as many women need an inspiration; someone to admire and desire to be. The fact that you can see her stomach makes it more enticing for women, as many aspire to have a flat stomach and toned abs.
The cover is designed to make the public feel inferior, as the flat stomach and skinny thighs are hard to achieve on a healthy diet. Also, her tanned skin and full hair are other things that most women want to achieve, and again, making them feel inferior for not looking like the magazine cover.

Ghost Ship Narrative
From this opening sequence you can tell it's set in the mid 1900s, maybe the 50s or the 60s, because of the outfits and the diagetic music. We can also tell that they are upper class, because of their costume. Initially, because of the typography and the use of pink, we assume that it will be light hearted, and possibly a rom-com. The music contributes to this assumption, as it is calming and uplifting. However, the red dress of the singer indicates a warning of something that will go wrong. However, the little girl's white dress indicates innocence and tranquillity.
The sudden contrast of the bright dance floor to the dark, formidable switch and reel shows us that something is gong to go wrong very suddenly. The pink roses are cut first, which links back to the pink typography, and the end of the light hearted, happy film that we all expected. It also shows the destruction of innocence in the little girl. The non-diagetic sound of the vibrating saw makes the scene even more terrifying,as it makes it feel like we are standing right next to the saw. As the saw cut through everyone, the lighting darkens to a dim grey, representing the change in mood and time; now everything will be different for the little girl. The Sea Captain comforted her, an protected her despite that fact that he was about to die, showing that everything that will help her will get hurt, or die.

Demonstrating Understanding of Genre within a Film Pitch
We were trying to achieve an action film for pre-teens. I believe this was fairly successful, as we conformed to the conventions of the genre, but it was still an original idea.
If we were to do it again, we would create and explain more enigma codes, to make the audience think, and to entice them in, as the rest of the class noticed the absence of enigma codes.
The general response was that we needed to improve our enigma codes, however our conventions, marketing, title and cast was met with a very good response, with and average of 7/10 for each.

Supernatural, Season 8 Promotional Poster |
This promotional poster depicts two brothers, Sam, who is crouching and looking into the camera, and Dean, who is standing, with his head facing off screen, over Sam's shoulder, in the foreground of the shot, with a man on either side, Crowley and Castiel (left, right) in the distance, both dressed in sharp, black suits. The background and setting is an empty highway. Behind Crowley, there is darkening clouds, with a lightning bolt hitting the ground, and a pit of fire where the grass should be. Behind Castiel, there is white clouds with the sun shining through and grass. The title, 'Supernatural' is written at the bottom in white, shadowy letters.
As Dean is standing tall, we can assume that he is in a position of power over Sam, however, Sam is looking directly at the camera, which could symbolise that he can take control from Dean, who can be easily distracted, which we can assume from him facing off screen. Sam and Dean are in the foreground, so we can expect them to be the main characters.
Crowley, who is standing in the left of the background, has a pit of fire beneath his feet, we can judge that he has a link to Hell, and is fairly formidable, due to the lightning in the background, which stands out despite being small and far away. The fact that he is in a suit tells us that he is in a power of position, perhaps the ruler of Hell, or a close consultant of the ruler, or just an incredibly powerful foe.
Castiel is standing in the background on the right, beneath the opening white clouds, so we can guess that he has a link to Heaven, as an Angel, or perhaps a Seraph. The fact that he is also is in a suit says that he too could be incredibly powerful. The white of the clouds suggests Castiel's purity, saying that he wants to do the right thing, no matter what.
Despite the different parts of the image, Dean and Castiel are standing very close, with a small visible gap between them. This suggests that they have a very close relationship, despite what seems to be two different species.
The road that Sam and Dean are standing on separates the two realms; Heaven and Hell, suggesting that Sam and Dean are the thing holding the two realms in peace from each other. We can see the animosity in Crowley's and Castiel's faces, who both have incredibly strong glare on their faces.
The actual title is blurred vertically. This suggests that everything is not what they seems up and down; in Heaven and Hell. However, the actual writing is still clear, which could symbolise Sam and Dean, showing that they're the only things that we can rely on and trust.

Opening Sequence - The Breakfast Club
The opening sequence for The Breakfast Club presents itself as both a comedy and a drama. The voice over highlights the different characters presented in the movie, and then presents the characters interacting with their parents. It displays the stereotypical interaction between a teenager and a parent, despite the class of the family, which can easily be seen in the quality of the method of transport. We can assume the genres because of the shot of the high school, as high school films are usually a combination of romance, comedy and drama. The fact that it is showing it to be a sunny day, reflects that the film may be cheerful, or at least showing various problems to be resolved.
As it is set in a high school, we understand that the film will be about relationships, stereotypes and communication. The film is portraying parents as the evil characters, as we see by the teens' reactions to their parents. The teens' characters are undetermined despite the stereotypes mentioned in the voice over, "a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal", while it is easy to work out which character correlates with each stereotype, we cannot fully work out each character's impact on the film and story.
The upbeat backing track supports the earlier point of the sunny day reflecting cheerfulness, and the genre, as the beat would excite you to watch something with the same rhythm. The montage of the interior of the school show the negatives of school, for example, the graffiti on the locker displays bullying.
We can see the clock in the montage of the school, which we can see will be important, as the time is set at 7 AM, we will be able to refer to the time in the film, and see the evolution of the story. The school is deserted, so we can assume it is the weekend, for a Saturday detention, which is confirmed when the parents scold their kids for being there in the first place.
