Representation Theory

The Male Gaze, the idea that the audience are forced to look at women from the men's point of view, or narcissistic women looking in the mirror. (Laura Mulvey)




The Female Gaze, A modernised version of The Male Gaze, except it is from the females perspective.

 

The Bechdel Test, the idea that films should pass 3 criteria for women:
  • 2 named female characters
  • the 2 women must have a conversation
  • the conversation can't be about men/boys
